The Origin of Mother's Day

First off, we'd like to say HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY to all of you wonderful mothers out there! To those of you who are biological mothers and to those of you who have stepped in and taken on the role of mother to someone else's child, we appreciate you!

Now, we all celebrate Mother's Day each year, but how many of us actually know how it started? Culturally, the celebrations date back probably further than we all can think. The ancient Egyptians celebrated the mother goddess Isis, the Greeks celebrated the goddess Rhea who was mother of other deities such as Zeus, and the Romans celebrated their mother figure Cybele.

But how did the tradition come to North America? It all began with Julia Ward Howe who wrote a proclamation in 1870 asking for an international Mother's Day of Peace for sons to stop killing the sons of other mothers. Mother's Day as we know it today began in 1908 when Anna Jarvis of West Virginia held a Mother's Friendship Day in honor of her own mother. She gave her mom's favorite flower to every mother who attended. (Today, white carnations are used to honor deceased mothers while pink or red ones are for mothers who are still living.) Six years later in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson declared the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day.

Interesting, right? Well, we want to hear all about your 2012 Mother's Day stories! Share with us on our Facebook or Twitter, and as always, visit elaborateevents.net for all of your event needs! ;)

What "Think Like a Man" Means for Black Hollywood

The Steve Harvey comedy made $18 million, according to studio estimates from box-office tracking firm Hollywood.com. The encore weekend lifted the $12 million film's overall revenue to $60.9 million, more than twice what analysts anticipated. So, what does that mean for Black Hollywood overall? Souleo of Black Enterprise had the chance to talk to the film's director Datari Turner, and here are some of his thoughts:

"I think it definitely helps Black Hollywood and Black films continue to get made. Now in Hollywood 70-80% of profits come from overseas. One thing Hollywood tells you is that Black films don’t translate well overseas. So when it can do that domestically it shows that we have an audience if the quality is there ..."

What are your thoughts on the movie, and why do you think Black films don't translate well overseas?

Breaking More Wedding Traditions!

Popular shopping site Etsy has now launched a full-blown weddings hub with blog posts, real-life wedding stories, and a gift registry! Huffington Post Weddings recently got a preview of the latest Etsy wedding trends, here they are:

1) Think Outside the Floral Bouquet Box: Consider using fabric, paper, jewels and other materials instead of real flowers to make bouquets. Unlike flowers, these non-floral materials won't wilt, giving you a lifetime keepsake.

2) Interactive Save-the-Dates: Instead of simply informing your guests of your wedding date, get them involved! Consider things like scratch-off cards to reveal the date.

3) Moving Away From White: Adam Brown, a public relations manager with Etsy, says, "Dresses that aren't just white are trending." Consider pinks, blushes, and muted colors. You may even want to wear a pantsuit instead of a dress!

4) Here Comes the Bride: Instead of having your flower girls carry flowers, have them carry "Here comes the bride!" signs.

5) Personalized Bridesmaid Gifts: The standard pair of matching earrings gift is out! Consider giving your bridesmaids gifts like a picture of the two of you or customized lockets with a small surprise inside.

6) New Shoe Clips, Not New Shoes: If you don't want your bridesmaids to worry about buying new shoes, just spruce up the shoes they have with matching flower clip-ons. This will bring the shoes together while avoiding unwanted costs at the same time!

7) Speaking of Shoes, Bridal Booties Exist: Instead of the regular heel, consider lace booties like these from Kristen Ashley.

8) The Ring: Designers are beginning to move towards more contemporary ring designs than antique ones, especially since the debut of Kate Middleton's sapphire ring. You can find a nice selection here: Etsy Engagement Rings.

9) Don't Forget to Thank the Groomsmen: Flower boutonnieres are out! Instead of the floral designs, consider things like a guitar pick for the musician in the group or a tiny paint brush for the artist.

Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon Renew Wedding Vows

On Friday, April 27, 2012, Mariah Carey, 42, and Nick Cannon, 31, renewed their wedding vows in Paris. The couple was married in the Bahamas in 2008, and gave birth to their twins, Moroccan and Monroe, last April. Shortly after the vow renewal, Cannon and Carey boarded their private jet to Austria to celebrate the twins' first birthday. Sounds like they're going to have a wonderful 4th honeymoon! What do we think of Carey's dress?

On January 29, 1971, Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong was a featured performer at the National Press Club in Washington. He died less than 6 months later. Now, for the first time, a CD of one of his final trumpet performances has been released. The CD is entitled "Red Beans and Rice-ly Yours: Satchmo at the National Press Club." Breaking Out of the Norm!

Getting tired of those old, worn-out wedding traditions? Well, we've stumbled upon a few alternatives just for you. Here they are:

1) Instead of getting married in the church by a priest, try a beach, mountain, or cliff (or ELABORATE EVENTS, of course) and have a family member get ordained to do the honors.

2) Instead of wearing a veil, just let your hair down and be YOU!

3) Instead of wearing white from head-to-toe, switch it up and wear whatever shoe color warms your heart!

4) Instead of having each bridesmaid wear the same old boring dress, have them wear differently styled dresses, yet all in the same fabric.

5) Instead of tossing the bouquet ONLY to single ladies, open it up to all of the women in the house, and offer a small prize to the winner.

6) Ditch that played out place card! Google "Wedding place card alternatives" and get inspired!

7) Get rid of that traditional flower centerpiece and Google "Wedding centerpiece alternatives."

8) Lose the plain table number pieces and spice it
up a little! Once again, Google "Wedding table number alternatives" for some great ideas.

9) Instead of the traditional "first dance song," surprise everyone with something unusual! Have fun!

10) Choose a cupcake tower with an awesome cake topper instead of the expected wedding cake.

11) Instead of spending money on favors, donate the money to the charity of your choice in remembrance of a loved one.

12) Last but not least, hire a wedding painter to capture all of that reception fun!
